The rainy weekend proved to be a very busy time for the Sunnyvale Public Library. The circulation backroom was filled to the brim with returned materials this morning. Over 11,000 items were returned, with more in process. Over 19,000 items were checked out Saturday through Sunday by 5,600 visitors to the library, meaning that the next few weekends may be even busier.
To help address the efficiency of processing checked out and returned library materials in such a constricted space, the City Council approved exploration of the cost/benefit of an RFID materials handling/automated returns system at their January 25 Council Study Issues/Budget Issues workshop. They also approved consideration of eliminating the $.50 reserves fee as part of the budget process.
Library staff also will be seeking input from the community to gather additional information on another issue that Council decided to consider - a branch library. Please keep an eye on the Library’s Web site, www.sunnyvalelibrary.org, for announcements about any upcoming meetings and/or surveys regarding the branch library services study issue.

Rainy days _are_ an excellent reason to start coming to the library, but it is your immense and diverse collection along with your pleasant space that will keep people coming back. As a newcomer to Sunnyvale, I was so pleasantly surprised to find that Sunnyvale has such an excellent library!
Hi Kellyann,
Thanks so much for checking out the blog and responding. We appreciate the compliment as well. The Library has several challenges and we are doing what we can to address them. Welcome to Sunnyvale!

A branch (and/or expanded) library is not the solution. With the growing use of the Internet, all hard copy books and other media should be digitized and made available online. Use the money to expand storage and servers for the inevitable growing online usage of the library.
"...all books... should be digitized..." Horrors!!!!!
Yay for the Sunnyvale library. I'm so happy to be back in the neighborhood.
